THE BUILDING OF THE NASS RIVER BRIDGE
The first vehicular bridge across the Nass River was built by the Engineering Division of the BC Forest Service. The bridge closed the final gap between Highway 16 linking Prince Rupert and Prince George, and the Stewart Cassiar Road, it also linked Stewart at head of the Portland Canal with Watson Lake on the Alaska Highway.
The Nass River Bridge gorge is almost 400 feet wide at the selected crossing near Meziadin Lake and the bridge decking is nearly 130 feet above the river bed. The main spam is 186 feet in length. The 80 to 93 foot Douglas fir girders were facricated by Coast Laminated Timbers Ltd. of Richmond, BC and pressure creosoted by TPL Industries Ltd. of Burnaby
